Developing Your Personal Brand: Mastering the “ME” Talk

Tuesday, Feb 7, 2017

You’ve all heard about “pitching products”, but how many of you can truly pitch the most important product of all – YOURSELF. Whether you are starting your career, switching careers, or promoting your services, you will likely be asked to introduce yourself to a prospective employer or to someone who could connect you to an opportunity. In the U.S., these 30-seconds will begin or end a conversation. Are you ready?

Our event leader, Annette Herz of Compass Marketing has years of experience successfully marketing consumer brands both nationally and internationally. Born in Germany and raised in the U.S., she has had to deal with the nuances of marketing and working in both the German and American business cultures during her career.

Whether you already have experience working in the U.S. and need a refresher, need some guidance in making a career change, or are just learning how to enter a foreign job market, this short workshop gave you the tools to feel prepared and confident — to start pitching yourself.

In this session, guests worked in pairs and then with the whole group to:

  • Learn how to best position themselves for success
  • Critically assess their skill set with an eye to their prospects
  • Develop their own 30-second pitch
  • Discuss the importance of having a plan to market their personal brand

Guest arrived ready to interact and worked in pairs to refine their pitches.  Brave participants then volunteered to “test drive” their pitches to the group where they received valuable feedback and support.

ALL GABC members and non-members were warmly invited to attend,  and especially young international professionals and postdocs, mature professionals in transition, and/or international professionals new to Boston. Due to the interactive nature of this event, the workshop was limited to 35 participants. Light refreshments were provided.

This workshop generously hosted by the law firm of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo, P.C.

Participants worked in pairs to write (and rewrite and rewrite…) their pitches until they had crafted the perfect pitch.
