Young Professionals Group Event: Kick-off Meeting

Wednesday, Jun 29, 2016

For GABC members between the ages of 20 and 35 at the beginning of their careers. This new group provides a network to share your experiences of working, doing research, and studying in the U.S. and Germany with other young professionals, while also exploring new opportunities through our extensive network of seasoned professionals.  Uncertain of your future?  Looking for some guidance, resources, or an understanding ear? Want to attend events with access to senior executives in your field?  Want to post your CV on our website, and hear about job openings through the grapevine before others do? Want to talk to successful professionals who have gone before you, to see what career path they took?  Or share tips with your peers? Then join us!

On Thursday 6/29, the very successful first kick off meeting for the new GABC Young Professionals Group (YP GABC) happened as part of an introduction to the GABC board on the roof top of board member Angelo Moesslang’s private home in the Back Bay.

A large part of the board members were present, including the president, Erik Dilger, as well as Charlie Cameron, Deputy Consul Helmut Landes, Doug Hauer and Marian LeMay as well as a substantial pool of members who volunteered to be advisors and mentors to the YP.

The most pressing things discussed were:

Mentorship:

Most YP see it as most valuable to have a Mentor with whom they can discuss future career perspectives.  Two options were discussed: 1) A pool of mentors that tailors to the temporal needs of each Mentee and is available for advice when needed and of expertise, or 2) a close one-on-one relationship.

Formation of a YP GABC core committee:

To discuss future ideas, activities and directions of the YP a core group of max. 9 YP members will form. These core committee members will be the primary contacts for the whole group. Cornelia Kroeger, Romy Wichmann and Anne Fassl, who also run the Boston GAIN (German Academic International Network) were key players in spurring GABC to start this YP group and will logically be part of this core committee. The next meeting of the YP GABC will be held at the end of July and is still to be determined.

Communication:

What would be the best mode of communication between the mentors and the YPs?  Would it be advisable to open a LinkedIn Group to connect everyone, connect by text, or just continue to connect by email?  Messages concerning YP GABC which go out to the whole GABC will continue to be sent from email address info@gabc-boston.org , but more informal communication between  YP members can take a different form. A list of YP members and Mentors/Advisors was provided to each YP, so they can be in touch with each other directly for get-togethers, carpooling, questions, etc.

Future meetings:

How often do the YPs meet, independently or within the GABC ? Which talks or networking events should be offered?  Will the meetings be via teleconference (using GABC’s free conference call account), or in person, or a combination of both depending on the nature of the meeting?
